About us

Behind the name Funkwerk is a medium-sized group with several locations in Germany and Austria. The Funkwerk Group has emerged as a technological leader in the growing markets of mobility and digital infrastructure.

With tailor-made concepts, Funkwerk controls and rationalises operational processes, primarily for the railway industry and public transport, and also develops and realises mobility concepts for the public domain. Amongst other things, Funkwerk develops and sells professional communication solutions for railways.

As a company, we continue to set new technical standards, for instance the migration of analog communication to digital communication systems. This also includes the development and distribution of solutions for effective migration from GSM-R to the new 5G-based FRMCS technology. With our technical solutions, we are an international leader.

Communication Technology

Funkwerk Systems GmbH offers a variety of solutions for modern mobile communication systems. These range from classic analogue radio systems, DMR and GSM-R to modern 4G and 5G solutions.

The focus is on operational railway communication. GSM-R technology is the current backbone and offers market-leading solutions with the train radio system MESA26 and the GSM-R mobile device focX2.

All systems also support customised LTE and 5G solutions, but also standalone communication via MCX protocols.

Voice and Data Communication GSM-R, 4G and 5G

Proven and certified according to the latest standards, our MESA® radio system forms the basis for communication in railway operations, regardless of the network access technology (analogue/2G/4G/5G). The future viability of the MESA® is also ensured by its modular software which allows flexible adaptations to customer needs. In addition, we offer the CRLT, a 4G-based cab radio that can be installed as an all-in-one device. We covers the area of ETCS applications with the EDOR radio module.

Handhelds focX2

Funkwerk has updated its product portfolio with the introduction of the focX2 mobile telephone, an Android-based 3G/4G smartphone with a dedicated GSM-R wireless modem. Decoupling the modem ensures the cyber-security of the rail operations and, at the same time, allows the device to be used in public networks outside rail operations. The extreme durability of the device means it is ideal for use in rough environment. Of course, this hand-held device meets all requirements of the EIRENE standard.

MCX and FRMCS clients

Funkwerk is providing a MCx/FRMCS client based on Linux for voice radio (MCPTT, MCData, MCVideo) and connection of other on-board systems to a 5G and/or FRMCS network.
Mission Critical applications (MCx) refer to a type of communication system used in critical or emergency situations where immediate and reliable communication is essential. It allows individuals to communicate instantly and seamlessly with each other via a mobile device or a specialized radio system.
